Ironridge Ground Mount System: A Procurement Checklist That Pays For Itself

Who This Checklist Is For
If you're a solar contractor pricing a ground-mounted array, you don't need another product pitch. You need a checklist. This is the one I use when I specify an Ironridge ground mount system—and it applies whether you're dealing with a six-module small off grid solar kit or a 200-module commercial array.
A bit of background: I'm a procurement manager at a 22-person solar installation company in the US. I've managed our equipment spend—roughly $1.1M a year—for six years, negotiated with 30+ vendors, and tracked every order in our cost system. This checklist worked for us, but our situation is specific. We do residential and light commercial, with a growing number of battery storage add-ons. If you're doing utility-scale ground screws in the desert, your mileage may vary.
The Checklist
Step 1: Define the load case before you count rails
The most common mistake isn't choosing the wrong rail. It's choosing any rail before you know the wind and snow conditions at the site. The Ironridge solar rail line—XR10, XR100, and the rest—has published load tables, but those tables only work if you input the right assumptions.
What I mean is this: a 6-module array behind a barn and a 6-module array on an open hillside have different wind profiles. More than once, a surveyor quoted "typical exposure" without visiting the site. If you don't have a site-specific ground snow load and wind speed, you're not ready to order.
We learned this the hard way in 2023. A ground mount had to be reworked because the soil conditions were different from what the quote assumed. The fix cost $1,200 in labor, rental equipment, and replacement parts. Looking back, I should have paid $300 for a quick soil check. At the time, the project was a small off grid solar kit and the client didn't want to spend. It was the wrong place to save.
Step 2: Compare total cost, not per-rail price
Here's the thing: the quote that looks cheapest on paper is rarely cheapest after freight, missing hardware, and rework. I compare vendors on TCO—total cost of ownership (i.e., hardware price, freight, assembly time, and support when something doesn't line up).
Earlier this year, I compared two quotes for an Ironridge ground mount system:
- Vendor A: $4,100 complete. Freight included, all clamps and ground screws in the crate.
- Vendor B: $3,650, but freight was $520 and it didn't include the interconnecting brackets or lag bolts. Total: $4,170, plus two days of chasing parts.
Vendor A won. The surprise wasn't the price difference. It was how much hidden value came with the "expensive" option—support, revisions, and quality guarantees. If I had gone with B to save $450, the delay would have eaten the savings.
Step 3: Check battery storage compatibility early
Clients email me all the time and ask, "Can you recommend an energy storage system?" My first answer isn't a brand. It's a question: what's your load profile and where is the equipment going? The mounting system has to work alongside the battery enclosure, and enclosures have clearance requirements you can't ignore.
A partner recently asked me to review a proposal for a battery storage installation in Flixton—a village in the UK. The scope included a small off grid solar kit and an Ironridge ground mount system. The battery manufacturer required 300mm of clearance around the enclosure for airflow and service access. The ground mount gave enough rail height to keep DC cables off the ground and terminations out of the wet zone. But that only worked because we checked the battery manual before ordering the rails.
Don't assume that a rail that fits the panel also fits the battery bracket. There's no universal mounting interface. Send the battery's installation manual to the racking vendor and ask for confirmation. It costs twenty minutes and saves a site visit.
Step 4: Get delivery certainty in writing
This is where I've learned to pay more for certainty. In May 2024, we had a grant-funded community project with a hard install date. Our usual vendor quoted a 5–7 day lead time for the Ironridge ground mount. I asked whether that was from order confirmation or after production. The answer was vague. So I paid $400 extra for expedited shipping from a different supplier. The alternative was missing a $15,000 installation event. The $400 bought certainty. I'd do it again.
Look, I'm not saying rush delivery is always worth it. If the timeline is flexible, standard shipping is fine. But when a deadline matters, the cost of waiting isn't the shipping fee—it's the crew standing around, the client losing trust, and the risk of a penalty. Uncertain "cheap" is more expensive than certain "expensive."
Step 5: Document the as-built like you're going to be audited
Every mounting system order should end with an as-built record: rail model and length, clamp type, torque values, and ground screw depth. Ironridge's installation manuals are decent—they include torque specs and rail span limits—but they're not a substitute for your own records.
We learned this after an inspector asked for stamped engineering drawings on a commercial ground mount. We had to email the manufacturer, wait three days, and pay a small fee for the stamped set. If I could redo that decision, I'd request stamped drawings before ordering. But given what we knew at the time—that the project would be inspected—the choice wasn't unreasonable. It was just an avoidable delay.
Watch Out For
Three things show up again and again with contractors new to ground mounting:
Ground screw vs. concrete. Ground screws are faster, but they only work in certain soil. On rocky or filled ground, concrete footings are the more certain choice. Our local soil is heavy clay, so screws work well here. Your site may be different.
Galvanic corrosion. Mounting a steel module frame to an aluminum rail requires the right interface—usually stainless steel hardware or the proper isolation washer. (A standard zinc-plated bolt isn't always enough.)
Environmental claims. If a supplier markets a system as "recyclable" or "eco-friendly," ask for the basis of that claim. According to the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims must be substantiated. That's not just legal box-ticking. It's also useful when your client passes documentation along to their own compliance team.
Final notes
This checklist isn't a substitute for stamped engineering. But it will keep you from buying on sticker price and then paying for the difference in delays and rework. If you're specifying an Ironridge ground mount system, get the load case right, compare the full cost, verify battery compatibility, and write down the delivery commitment. The rails are only part of the project. The certainty around them is what actually saves you money.
