Most solar installers I talk to start the conversation the same way: “What’s your best price per watt for the racking?”

The question everyone asks is, “Does this racking work with [panel model]?” The question they should ask is, “Does this racking system have a verified compatibility list for this specific roof pitch and these panels, with a manual I can read in English before I buy?”

People think expensive racking costs more because of the brand name. Actually, expensive racking costs more because the engineering has been tested, the manual has been written, and the support team has already solved your problem three times this week. The causation runs the other way: comprehensive support costs money to maintain, and that cost is built into the price. When you buy cheap racking, you’re not saving money—you’re outsourcing the cost to your own troubleshooting.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I’d estimate that 70% of our rush orders are from installers who tried to save 10-20% on the racking. They didn’t save anything. They just moved the cost from the purchase line to the labor and shipping line.

The Three Hidden Costs of a Low-Priced Racking System

  4. I’m not 100% sure every cheap system has these problems. But I can tell you: in my experience, the ones that do are the ones that arrive in a box with no support and no manual. And those are the projects that end up on my desk at 4 PM on a Friday.

    The Alternative: What Actually Works

    So what’s the alternative to a low-priced gamble? It’s not necessarily more expensive. It’s transparent.

    The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. Why? Because their price includes the documentation, the compatibility testing, and the support. You don’t have to guess what you’re getting. You can see it before you buy.

    For a typical 50kW commercial ground mount project, the difference between a system with complete documentation and one without is about 8-12 hours of a lead installer’s time. At $100/hour, that’s $800-$1,200 in labor. Add in the potential for a day of delay, and you’re looking at a $2,000+ swing. Per project.

    I’ve learned to ask “what’s not included?” before “what’s the price?” Because the answer tells me more about the total cost of a project than any spreadsheet can.

    The bottom line? If you’re an installer looking at racking systems, don’t let a low price blind you to the risks. A system that looks cheap today can destroy your profit margin tomorrow. And when you’re on the roof at 5 PM with a client’s deadline looming, the price of the racking is the last thing you’ll be thinking about.
