What a Ground Mount Job Taught Me About IronRidge Racking, EV Chargers, and Powerwall Pricing

In March 2022, I was standing in a thawing field in Monmouth County, New Jersey, looking at an IronRidge ground mount layout that I had helped design. Forty-two XR100 rails were staged on dunnage. The Fuse Quiver mounting bracket sat in my gloved hand. It was supposed to be simple. It wasn't.
I had been installing solar racking since 2017. My first year included the classic mistakes: I ordered rails for a roof mount without accounting for the module width. I overtightened a mid-clamp and cracked the frame. I thought those days were over. Then this ground mount job showed up.
The homeowner wanted three things: a 10 kW ground mount in the side yard, a Tesla Powerwall, and EV charger installation in Monmouth. I had used IronRidge solar racking on roofs for years. That's why I skipped the current installation manual. That was the mistake.
The Fuse Quiver Bracket Was Not the Problem. I Was.
The Fuse Quiver mounting bracket is a small steel piece. It holds a fuse holder or disconnection assembly to the rail. On a table, it's obvious. On a real ground mount, with wind and mud and a deadline, it's easy to install backward.
I installed the bracket on the top flange of the XR100 rail because it was easier to reach. The fuse holder then sat above the rail, where the DC wires from the Powerwall would have to bend hard around it. The instructions call for the bracket to be mounted on the lower flange, with the fuse holder positioned below the rail, where the wire runs live. I had not read the instructions closely. I knew I should have. But I thought, what are the odds the orientation matters? The odds caught up with me.
We caught it after the first three modules were on. The result: $620 in extra labor and a two-day delay. We had to pull those modules, move twelve brackets, and rerun the wire. The embarrassing part was that the printed manual was in the cab of my truck the whole time.
The upside of skipping the manual had been maybe twenty minutes. The risk was a failed inspection and a rework. I kept asking myself whether twenty minutes was worth it. It wasn't.
Ground Mounts Are Not Roof Mounts Laid Flat
Everything I'd read said ground mounts are simpler because there's no roof penetration. In practice, I found they're simpler in one way and more unforgiving in another. On a roof, the existing slope establishes the module plane. On an IronRidge ground mount, every pile height, channel level, and rail splice has to work together before you tighten anything. You can't hide a misaligned rail behind flashing.
I also learned that the details change faster than I expected. The manual I downloaded in 2022 had different torque and clamping guidance than the one I had saved in 2020. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed—grounding, bonding, mechanical attachment—but the execution has transformed.
Actually, that's not quite right. The rails were fine. The torque specs were clear. My problem was that I treated the manual as optional because the bracket looked intuitive. If the bracket had been the only issue, we would have lost an hour. The bigger lesson was that my mental model had gotten stale.
The EV Charger Permit I Didn't Expect
This project also included EV charger installation in Monmouth. The homeowner wanted a Level 2 charger in the garage, installed around the same time as the ground mount. I assumed the solar permit covered everything. It didn't.
Under NEC Article 625, EV supply equipment has its own wiring requirements. In our township, that also meant a separate electrical permit for the EV circuit, even though it was going to be connected to the same panel. We had to stop work and file an additional application. That added fees and a four-day wait.
Monmouth County has a lot of separate municipalities, and they don't all treat EV charger installation the same way. Now I tell every installer who asks: before you quote EV charger installation in Monmouth, call the local building department and ask whether the charger needs its own permit. It's a ten-minute phone call that can prevent a week of delays.
How Much Are Tesla Solar Panels and Powerwall?
The homeowner asked me the exact question I get all the time: how much are Tesla solar panels and Powerwall? I used to answer from memory. Now I don't.
As of early 2025, I tell clients to think of it as two numbers. A typical 8 kW Tesla solar system installed on a simple asphalt roof runs somewhere around $20,000 to $26,000 before the federal tax credit, depending on local labor rates and roof complexity. A Powerwall 3 installed—again, before incentives—usually lands in the $13,000 to $16,000 range. So an 8 kW system plus one Powerwall is probably $33,000 to $42,000 before the 30% federal tax credit. For a 10 kW system and two Powerwalls, that number climbs above $50,000.
That's not a quote. I don't quote from memory anymore, because Tesla changes pricing by region and configuration. A number that's too high can drive a client away; a number that's too low creates distrust later. Both are expensive. I give a ballpark and then show clients where to verify current pricing.
The Checklist I Use Now
Since that job, I have installed a lot more IronRidge solar racking. The mistakes didn't stop, but they got more boring—and that's the goal. I keep a checklist with the racking stack now. It includes:
- Read the current IronRidge installation manual for the exact rail and bracket. The PDF on my phone is not the manual from 2020.
- Lay out the Fuse Quiver mounting bracket with the actual fuse holder and wire, not a photo from another project.
- Check whether the ground mount requires shimming before final torque, not after.
- Call the local building department about EV charger permits before quoting the charger installation.
- Confirm current Tesla Powerwall pricing before putting a number in a proposal.
Fundamentals haven't changed, but execution has transformed.
This checklist probably sounds basic. It is. At least, that's been my experience with ground mounts up to 30 kW. Grounding, torque, wire management, permits, and honest pricing still matter. The details are just different now. If you're doing a ground mount for the first time, don't be like me. Don't assume the little brackets don't matter. They're the reason you'll be back on site at 6 a.m. on a Tuesday, pulling modules off a rail, with the manual in your truck and mud on your boots.
